Episode 114: Canonical Comes Full Circle

11-04-2017

Ubuntu 18,04 will not be using Unity, but GNOME instead. Red Hat and Fedora teams seem to be thrilled with the idea. The good news is that Unity will likely be forked.

System76's Meerkat is the system that Thomas has ordered. He configured it as follows:

  • 2.9 GHz i5-6260U + Intel Iris Graphics (1.8 up to 2.9 GHz – 4MB Cache – 2 Cores – 4 Threads)
  • 16 GB Dual-channel DDR4 at 2133 MHz (2× 8 GB)
  • 32 GB M.2 SSD (Using as the OS and apps drive)
  • 750 GB 2.5″ 7200 RPM Drive (Using as the data drive)

Thomas currently has Ubuntu Mate 16.04 installed on the SSD with his home directory on the traditional hard drive. Thus far, he loves it.
